When Brian Banner was released from the mental hospital after fifteen years, he confronted the now adult Bruce, tormenting him with the knowledge of his actions. Enraged, Bruce lashed out, striking his father, who fell backwards, struck a tombstone, and was killed. Bruce repressed the memory of his father's death, and his own involvement in it, for many years to come.

Shortly thereafter, Banner was present in the instrumentation bunker at the test site for the first test detonation of the gamma bomb. Observing that a civilian had breached security and entered the restricted test area, Banner told his colleague, Igor Starsky, to delay the countdown while he tried to get the civilian to safety. However, Starsky was secretly a Russian agent, actually named Igor Drenkov, and he allowed the countdown to continue, confident that Banner would die in the explosion, bringing the project to a halt. The Hulk was regarded a menace by the military, which constantly hunted him, often on the orders of Gen. Ross. The Hulk redeemed himself in the government's eyes by defeating the alien Metal Master, and soon after became a founding member of the Avengers. However, the Avengers distrusted the Hulk due to his dangerous temper; the other-dimensional shape shifter known as the Space Phantom exploited this distrust by impersonating the Hulk and turning the others against him. The deception was exposed, but the Hulk, feeling he was hated by the other Avengers, quit the group.

As the Hulk's savage personality became more ascendant, the Hulk became a public menace once again, continually hunted by the military led by the implacable Gen. Ross. During this time, the Hulk encountered one of his greatest enemies, the Leader. Continued...
